Anselmians maintain superb start to the season with sixth win

ROUND six of the league campaign saw Saints welcome Long Eaton from the East Midlands to Malone Field for the first time ever.

Weather was dry and overcast with a breeze towards the car park end and Taff Jones and the tractor boys had the pitch in excellent condition.

Kicking into the breeze it was Saints who started the brightest with centre Myles Holmes making a 30m break shrugging off a couple of attempts to bring him down before slipping the ball to speedster Arthur Lennon in space for an easy run in under the sticks and a 7-0 lead.

Long Eaton now started to find some momentum of their own - they have a large and well coached competitive pack - and after several attempts managed to slip the ball onto the wing and score in the corner, converted to put the score at 7-7.

With both the line out and scrum working well the ball was fired across the backline and with a final long pass by Olly Dodd, youngster Dan Woods broke a tackle to outpace the chasing winger and go over the whitewash, converted by the reliable Baldwin and a 14-7 lead.

Straight after the restart another great run by Holmes, who again slipped the ball to Lennon, who speed into the corner, not converted but giving Saints a comfortable 19-7 lead.

With Saints now in the driving seat a line out 15m out was collected and driven towards the line where Joe Sanders peeled off the back of the driving maul a full 4m out to go over the line for his 10th try of the season, again converted by Baldwin for 26-7.

With one minute to half time, Dodd and Ben Jones made runs towards the halfway line when Jones passed the ball into space for it to be hit at pace by Woods who ran the remaining 30m to place the ball under the sticks, converted by Baldwin for a 33-7 lead at the break.

Long Eaton started to have more possession for the next 15 minutes, but their scrum was under pressure, allowing Saints to ease their way up the pitch as Jones made a quick break slipping the ball to Woods who shipped the ball out to the waiting Dodd who cut back in to score unopposed near the sticks, again converted by Baldwin for 40-7.

With Saints 25m out they chose to go to the corner where Will Grebe secured the resulting line out to set up the drive, Sanders again going over for his second of the game.

Long Eaton now seemed to have their best period of the game scoring in the corner and converting to bring the score to 45-14.

Again Long Eaton pushed for another couple of scores in the hope of a bonus point at least but Saints' backs where making long runs whenever they got ball in hand, Dodd making a 30m break before putting Woods in for his hat-trick with Baldwin hitting the post to make it 50-14 with 10 minutes to go.

With the game now seemingly won, it was Long Eaton who scored under the sticks, converted to bring the score up to 50-21 but they were unfortunately unable to score the fourth try and gain a valuable point by full time.

The win makes it six wins out of six for Saints and a really solid start to the season.
