Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s Playoff Heroics Stem From This Adjustment

Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been the main character in the 2025 American League postseason. Vladdy has cemented his status as a Blue Jays icon with a string of epic performances that have his 2025 playoff numbers looking absurd at the moment.

What's driving Guerrero's stunning success, from a baseball strategy standpoint? For MLB analyst and former player A. J. Pierzynski, it's all about Vladdy's plate discipline.

"I played against his dad in the playoffs," Pierzynski said this week on Foul Territory.

"You could get his dad to swing at anything ... but he would hit it, right?"

"But the one thing about Junior is, in the playoffs, he has shrunk the (strike) zone to where he is really locked in, and this is what we always talk about ... players in the postseason ... shrink the zone because you just concentrate more."

"Every pitch means so much more, so you just lock in," Pierzynski continued.

"And he looks like a different player. He's taking controlled swings, he's swinging at balls in the strike zone, and this team doesn't strike out a lot ... Vlad is the leader of this ... if he goes up in the first (in Game 7) and he gets a hit, watch the energy ... watch how the energy just goes through the roof."

Guerrero will have another chance to enhance his legacy on Monday as his Blue Jays are one win away from the World Series. You have to imagine the Seattle Mariners won't be giving Vladdy many pitches to hit.
