Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist having medical ahead of West Brom move

Alfie Gilchrist is having a medical at West Bromwich Albion ahead of a permanent move from Chelsea.

The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet on July 22 that Chelsea have only been considering a permanent transfer for the 21-year-old and were seeking a fee of £5m. Several Championship clubs have asked about a loan with an option to buy, and Gilchrist has been training away from the main group while a transfer was pursued.

Gilchrist spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Sheffield United and made 32 appearances in all competitions as the club finished third in the Championship before being beaten in the play-off final by Sunderland.

The defender made his first-team debut for Chelsea in December 2023 and he featured 17 times during the 2023-24 campaign under former head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

He signed a new two-year contract in April 2024 which runs until 2026, with the option of a further year.

Gilchrist featured regularly for Sheffield United during the first half of last season, but he sustained an ankle injury at the end of January and subsequently played in just two of the team's final 17 Championship matches, before not making an appearance in the play-offs.

He was not included in Chelsea's Club World Cup-winning squad that travelled to the United States this summer.
