Adani Power, Bhutan's Druk Green Seal ₹6,000 Crore Hydropower Deal

Adani Power, Bhutan's Druk Green Seal ₹6,000 Crore Hydropower Deal

Thimphu: Adani Power has finalized a major agreement with Bhutan's state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) to jointly develop a 570 MW hydroelectric project with an estimated investment of ₹6,000 crore. The deal includes a shareholders' agreement, a power purchase agreement, and a concession agreement. Bhutan's Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani were present during the signing ceremony.

Project Timeline and Model

The Wangchhu Run-of-the-River Project will be developed on a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) model. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2026, with a target to complete the project within five years. Both companies will jointly manage construction, operation, and power supply.

Clean Energy Benefits for India and Bhutan

According to Adani Power CEO SB Khyalia, the project will help Bhutan meet its domestic energy demand during winters when hydropower output falls. During summers, surplus electricity will be exported to India, strengthening bilateral energy cooperation and providing clean energy to Indian consumers.

First Project Under 5,000 MW Partnership

The Wangchhu Project is the first initiative under a broader agreement signed in May 2025 between Adani Group and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower. Under this collaboration, DGPC will hold a 51% stake, while Adani Group will retain 49%.

Strengthening Regional Energy Security

This partnership is expected to enhance Bhutan's energy security while boosting India's clean energy supply. It marks a new phase in Bhutan-India relations, driven by sustainable energy cooperation.
