Rules Flouted in Quarantine of Giraffe Mishti at Birsa Munda Zoo

Ranchi: Officials at Birsa Munda Zoo have come under scrutiny for violating quarantine rules in the case of giraffe Mishti. As per wildlife norms, any large animal transferred from one zoo to another must undergo a 30-day quarantine before being displayed to the public. However, Mishti, brought from West Bengal, was showcased within just a week of arrival, allegedly on the instructions of a senior forest department officer.

Quarantine Rules Ignored

The giraffe enclosure at Birsa Munda Zoo was upgraded at a cost of nearly ₹60 lakh to accommodate Mishti, but officials failed to follow the mandatory quarantine protocol. The purpose of quarantine is to help the animal acclimatize to the new environment and reduce stress. During this period, veterinarians are required to monitor the animal's health before clearing it for public display. Mishti arrived in Ranchi on August 8, 2025, but was put on display by August 15, well before the 30-day requirement.

Concerns Over Animal Stress

Reports suggest that the decision to cut short Mishti's quarantine was made under instructions from a senior forest official. This premature exposure may have caused the giraffe stress, a factor that can lead to health complications. Mishti's collapse in her enclosure is being linked either to environmental stress or a leg injury, though confirmation awaits examination of quarantine records and veterinary reports.
