This is the grim interior of a shop, which saw its owner fined for hygiene breaches. Kamran Adil kept Lyric Wines, in Throckley, in a "filthy" condition, which prompted him to be prosecuted by Newcastle City Council.
The photos show shelves and stock covered in layers of dust and dirt, filthy fridges, which stocked milk, pies and cheese, damp on the walls, disgusting carpets and mats and a dirty counter. Council inspectors also found an open bag of food waste, which was so putrefied it was unrecognisable as to what it had been, and a basin, which was filthy and impossible to access because of boxes of stock.
In the shop's basement, the officers also came across building material waste, tins of beans, walls covered in damp, a further filthy sink and a toilet room with damp across the walls, prosecutors said. Rat bait was also discovered but there was no evidence of a rat infestation, Newcastle Magistrates' Court was told.
Adil, 54, Halterburn Close, in Gosforth, was fined £833 and ordered to pay £761 costs and a £333 victim surcharge. He pleaded guilty to face four charges of contravening EU provision concerning food safety and hygiene.
