Kailua-Kona to have 80 additional hospital beds

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- The west Hawaii community is set to have more health services, including a state-of-the-art emergency department, ambulatory care and a helipad to for inter-island patient transfers.

The Queen's Health Systems announced their plans to build an 80-bed hospital in Kailua-Kona's West Hawaii Business Park.

"Our goal is to create a centralized outpatient and specialty care hub to serve the West and North region of Hawaiʻi Island," said Jason Chang, President and CEO of The Queen's Health Systems. "This plan presents a transformative vision for healthcare delivery on the Island of Hawaiʻi. Anchored in the principles of "care close to home," this plan addresses the pressing challenges of delivering healthcare in rural and isolated settings while leveraging innovation, sustainability, and community engagement to create a resilient and patient-centered healthcare ecosystem."

In addition, Queen's is looking to provide skilled nursing, post-acute care and urgent care facilities.

To attract and retain skilled employees, Queen's is exploring an affordable housing program for employees in addition to a housing development adjacent to the new facility to attract medical professionals.

At Queen's North Hawaii Community Hospital, a 40,-square-foot facility will house a cancer center which will offer radiation oncology, infusion therapy, oncology surgery as well as precision medicine and genomics.

The plan, which aims to reduce traveling to Oahu for healthcare needs, will be phased over seven years.
