AWMA to reintroduce sanitation officers - Ghanaian Times

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly (AWMA), Mr George Kpakpo Allotey, has announced the reintroduction of sanitation officers to enforce sanitation by-laws under the government's renewed "Clean up Ghana Agenda."

Addressing a community engagement last Friday, Mr Allotey said the officers would be deployed in every electoral area to restore discipline and pride in public spaces.

According to him, the initiative seeks to make sanitation a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for local governance while encouraging citizen participation in national sanitation day exercises.

He cautioned residents of Opetekwei, Gbegbese, and Shaibu against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse and the practice of dumping waste into gutters during the rainy season, stressing that such acts would no longer be tolerated.

The meeting, which brought together opinion leaders, Assembly members, traditional authorities, and health officials, aimed to raise awareness of good sanitation practices and introduce the new officers to the communities.

Mr Allotey urged the public to prioritise the desilting of drains, the removal of refuse heaps, and the cleaning of markets, lorry parks, and schools.

Additionally, he emphasised that while the Assembly was supporting members with logistics and funding, residents must take responsibility for their surroundings to help prevent the spread of cholera and malaria.

Offenders, he warned, would be sanctioned in line with existing by-laws.

The Municipal Health Promotion Officer, Madam Elizabeth Kumi, revealed that government, through Zoomlion, had embarked on spraying exercises to destroy mosquito larvae in choked gutters and stagnant waters.

Madam Mabel Frimpong, Head of Environmental Health, further admonished residents to use treated mosquito nets properly and not repurpose them for domestic tasks.
