Hollywood icon Robert Redford has died at home in Utah, aged 89. Robert Redford was an American actor, director, producer, and environmental activist. He was born on 18 August 1936 in Santa Monica, California. Redford became one of the most prominent film stars of the 1960s and 1970s, known for his roles in classics such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), and All the President's Men (1976).

A statement from his publicist Cindi Berger, chairman and chief executive of talent agency Rogers and Cowan PMK, said: "Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah-the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.

"He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."

Redford also directed acclaimed films, including Ordinary People (1980), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned him the Oscar for Best Director. Beyond film, he founded the Sundance Film Festival, which grew into one of the most important platforms for independent cinema.

Throughout his career, Redford was regarded as both a Hollywood icon and a strong supporter of environmental and political causes.

He continued to direct acclaimed films such as A River Runs Through It (1992), Quiz Show (1994), The Horse Whisperer (1998), and Lions for Lambs (2007)

During the last decade or so of his life, although he had formally retired from acting after The Old Man & the Gun (2018), he made a notable cameo in the television series Dark Winds (2025) at his own request for a closed set. He also served as executive producer on that series, reaffirming his enduring involvement behind the camera.

Beyond film, Redford was deeply committed to environmental causes. He invested his early fortune in land conservation in Utah land that eventually grew into a nearly 5,000-acre sanctuary housing the Sundance Institute -- as he advocated vigorously for protection of air, water and wilderness as a longtime trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Robert Redford passed away on 16 September 2025 at his home in Utah, aged 89.
