Worcester City prepare for tough battle against relegation-battlers Lye Town

WORCESTER City travel away to another team in a relegation dogfight tonight (March 4), hoping to build off their 3-0 victory against drop-contenders Rugby Town.

February had been a tough month for The Faithful - a string of up-and-down results saw the side miss out on opportunities to reel in Corby Town in the hunt for home advantage in the playoffs.

However, they started March on a high note - soundly seeing off Rugby Town with a 3-0 win, while Corby were defeated by Darlaston Town.

As it stands Worcester City now sit in fourth position in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division - four points off Corby Town and Long Eaton, having played two games less than the latter of those two sides.

It was an even first half, but City came out and dominated the second. A brace from Zac Guinan and Shay Palmer getting off the mark with his first goal for the club sealed the victory.

Speaking after the win manager Chris Cornes said: "I think we deserved to win the game, we were the better side. Ultimately it could have been a few more with some of the chances we missed as well, but I will take that after the last few results - a clean sheet is good and scoring three goals."

Lye Town currently reside well within the relegation spots - however with games-in-hand on many sides sat above them, they will hope to pick up valuable points to escape the drop.

Most recently they lost 4-1 at home against Sutton Coldfield Town, having not picked up a win in the league since December.

Speaking ahead of the match, Cornes said: "It is going to be a huge, tough game. They are fighting for survival and they need every point - whether it is a draw or a win, they need to put points on the board.

"The be-all and end-all of that is they are going to be fighting and probably want the game more than us but we can't allow them to do that.

"I know they've lost [against Sutton Coldfield] but they are at home, it is on their pitch which can be a little bit tacky at times but we have just got to go there, win the game and do what suits us.

"Hopefully we can go there and get three points but it is going to be a tough game, not going to be easy at all. We are not going there thinking 'oh yeah, we should be winning this'.

"You have got to earn the right first and foremost and that is what we do with our work rate and what we do off the ball and hopefully we have got enough quality around that we can win it."
