Firefighters were called to the apartments near 74th and Cedar Streets about 2:35 a.m. They found smoke and flames coming from the first floor and evacuated all residents of the 30-unit building, Werner said.
"The Red Cross and Salvation Army are working with staff from the Onyx to find housing for the residents," he said. "It will take some time to determine if it's safe for them to return home."
The fire spread to the second floor and caused extensive damage, Werner said. Investigators were working to determine the extent of the damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
