Owatonna hospital to transition labor and delivery services to Allina Health

OWATONNA, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS) is making changes to its labor and delivery services at Owatonna Hospital. Starting November 17, Allina Health will take over OB/GYN physician staffing responsibilities for these services.

MCHS will continue to support expectant mothers with prenatal and postpartum care in Owatonna. The care teams will work with patients to ensure they receive safe and coordinated care throughout their pregnancy. MCHS has been providing these services through an agreement with Allina Health but is unable to continue due to staffing challenges and a nationwide shortage of OB/GYN physicians.

In a statement to KIMT News 3, Mayo Clinic Health System shared:

"Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS) remains deeply committed to supporting patients and serving the Owatonna community. Beginning November 17, Allina Health will assume OB/GYN physician staffing responsibilities for labor and delivery services at its Owatonna Hospital. MCHS care teams will continue working with each patient to support their needs through every stage of their pregnancy and ensure they receive safe, coordinated and high-quality care. Expectant mothers will continue to receive prenatal and postpartum care from their MCHS teams in Owatonna, and providers will work directly with each patient to review their birth plan, discuss delivery options, and ensure a smooth, coordinated experience. "

MCHS physicians have been solely providing the services through an agreement with Allina Health but are unable to continue due to recent staffing challenges and the ongoing nationwide shortage of OB/GYN physicians. MCHS continues to work with Allina Health to explore new ways to collaborate on labor and delivery services."

Owatonna city officials, including the mayor and city council, have expressed support for the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce's opposition to the proposal to divert birthing services from Owatonna. They emphasize the importance of local delivery services for the community's growth and economy.

MCHS is working with Allina Health to explore new ways to collaborate on labor and delivery services. KIMT News 3 requested further statements from Allina Health regarding the transition, and are awaiting a response.
