Report issued into death of teacher jailed for indecent acts on young pupil

In February 2024, Robert Kalton from Burton upon Trent, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to four counts of gross indecency with a boy under the age of 14 and two counts of gross indecency with a boy under the age of 16.

At the time, the ex-employee of St Augustine's Roman Catholic School, in Trowbridge, had been released from jail in 2023 following previous convictions in 2017 and 2019 for similar sex offences.

In total, Kalton had been convicted of 32 sexual offences against at least six young boys. His offending spanned two decades in various locations across the UK.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, Adrian Young, has now released the findings of an investigation into the sex offender's death on February 2, 2025.

Mr Young wrote: "He died of frailty of old age, in hospital, while a prisoner at HMP Dovegate.

"He also had hypertension (high blood pressure) and cerebrovascular disease (a condition that affects blood flow to your brain) which did not cause but contributed to his death.

"NHS England commissioned an independent clinical reviewer to review Mr Kalton's clinical care at HMP Dovegate.

"The clinical reviewer concluded that the clinical care Mr Kalton received at Dovegate was of a good standard and equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community.

"She found evidence of high-quality nursing and social care that met Mr Kalton's needs.

"The clinical reviewer noted that the healthcare team regularly reviewed him and appropriately prescribed anticipatory medication to manage his symptoms. She commended healthcare staff for delivering compassionate and person-centred end-of-life care.

"The PPO investigator investigated the non-clinical issues relating to Mr Kalton's care. We did not find any non-clinical issues of concern. We make no recommendations."

The initial report was shared with HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS). HMPPS did not find any factual inaccuracies. At the inquest, held on September 25, 20025, the Coroner concluded that Mr Kalton died of natural causes.

Kalton's victim in the most recent case came to police in December 2019 and reported that the maths teacher had abused him multiple times over a five-year period when he was aged between 11 and 16 years old in the 1970s.

In a victim statement read out at court, he said: "It is a place where you should feel safe. Instead, I was made to dread and fear going to school."
