WAVERLY, W.Va. (WTAP) -Officials at Mountwood park in Waverly West Virginia held it's annual fishing derby for any kid who wanted to sign up.
According to Jeremy Cross, the Wood County Parks Director, any child that catches a fish would receive their own trophy
Cross said the first place prizes would be judged by the length of the fish, and depending on the child's age group.
Cross added some of the kids were out catching their first ever fish with the derby.
"We have kids out here from all over," Cross said. "A lot of kids will catch their first fish here today, that's a really exciting thing for us to see their first fish that they catch. We give trophies away. We got prizes, fishing rods, tackle. We got a concession stand open here for good food. A lot of things going on here at the lake
Some of the kids that participated expressed what their favorite part of fishing is to them.
."probably like playing and catching stuff," said Wiley Fox.
"It's about having fun and about learning patience," said Christian Jones.
"It's about patience and you get like that good feeling about when you catch something," added Dominic Jones. When you catch something, it's just a good feeling."
Cross added the derby is a way for kids to get outdoors.
"We've got to get the next generation into fishing and into the outdoors," Cross expressed. "This fishing derby for the kids is an excellent way to do that."
