PUNE,INDIA - A mobile screening unit equipped with artificial intelligence is dramatically improving access to breast cancer detection in rural India, offering hope to women who previously lacked affordable and convenient screening options. The initiative, run by the Health Within Reach Foundation and utilizing AI technology from MedCognetics, has already screened over 3,500 patients, identifying 24 with cancer and connecting them to vital treatment.
the program centers around a van housing a digital mammography machine. The resulting images are analyzed on-site using an AI solution developed by MedCognetics, a dallas, Texas-based company participating in the NVIDIA Inception program. this allows for rapid triage of mammograms, prioritizing those requiring immediate attention. Crucially,90% of the women screened had never received a mammogram before.
"Developing countries generally have a lot of load on their existing healthcare institutions," explains Dr.Mudassar Shaikh, chief medical officer of the Health Within Reach Foundation. "This tech-enabled mobile healthcare program is solving a lot of healthcare access problems becuase, with the help of AI, we are able to bring high-quality care to peoples' doorsteps."
Approximately 8% of the mammograms conducted - roughly 300 cases - returned abnormal findings. Of those, the AI-assisted screening identified 24 patients with confirmed cancer, enabling timely referral for treatment. This early detection is critical, as earlier diagnosis considerably improves survival rates.
MedCognetics' AI systems are FDA-cleared as "software as a medical device," demonstrating a commitment to rigorous quality and safety standards. The company leverages NVIDIA technology for its deployment, offering flexibility through:
* NVIDIA IGX Orin: An industrial-grade edge AI platform for real-time processing directly on the van.
* NVIDIA Holoscan: A platform facilitating real-time sensor processing alongside IGX Orin.
* NVIDIA Tensor Core GPUs: Cloud-based processing for scalability and accessibility.
Beyond cancer triage, MedCognetics is actively developing a suite of AI-powered tools for breast cancer screening, including:

This initiative exemplifies the transformative potential of AI in global healthcare. The combination of mobile technology, AI-driven analysis, and strategic partnerships (like NVIDIA Inception) is proving notably effective in addressing healthcare disparities. The fact that 90% of screened women were receiving their first mammogram highlights the profound impact of this program. The focus on FDA clearance and robust technology platforms like NVIDIA IGX and Holoscan underscores a commitment to responsible and reliable AI implementation.Scaling this model could significantly improve breast cancer outcomes in underserved communities worldwide.
The success of this program in India demonstrates a viable model for bringing advanced medical technology to populations with limited access to healthcare.By leveraging the power of AI, the Health Within Reach Foundation and MedCognetics are not only saving lives but also paving the way for a more equitable future of healthcare.
