'Racist' police officers exposed in documentary face sack within weeks

Ten police officers whose racist and misogynistic behaviour was exposed in an undercover documentary are to face the sack within weeks.

They have been accused of gross misconduct and will be subject to accelerated disciplinary proceedings following a review by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

An undercover reporter working at Charing Cross police station's custody suite in London recorded officers calling for immigrants to be shot, describing Somalian people as scum and dismissing a woman's rape allegations.

Footage taken inside the station also captured officers allegedly assaulting detainees, including a 17-year-old autistic boy.

The revelations were the result of a seven-month investigation carried out by BBC's Panorama and come just two years after a report by Dame Louise Casey labelled the Met Police "institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic".

Scotland Yard said it expects to hold the hearings before the end of the month for the eight serving officers, a former Met constable and one who transferred to the Gloucestershire Constabulary.

Rachel Watson, the IOPC director general, said: "We were appalled by some of the behaviour and conduct displayed by a group of Met officers based at Charing Cross in the documentary.

"The public would rightly expect swift action being taken to remove officers who have no place in policing and a large team of investigators from across the country have been working at pace to analyse the evidence."

She added: "We anticipate that both forces will agree with our decision on accelerated proceedings and make arrangements for these hearings to take place as soon as possible in the coming weeks, in line with proper processes."

One of the officers remains under investigation for perverting the course of justice.

Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, said: "I have been very clear from the outset that I wanted to see all those responsible for this appalling behaviour facing gross misconduct hearings at the earliest opportunity. They have no place in the Met.

"After watching Panorama last week and seeing the behaviour for myself, I requested the early consideration of accelerated misconduct hearings and I welcome the IOPC's decision to pursue this course of action.

"We have worked together to deliver this uncompromising approach at greater speed than ever before and the hearings will take place by the end of the month."
