Free speed skating event to be held at Park City Ice Arena

Free speed skating event to be held at Park City Ice Arena

PARK CITY -- Park City Speedskating is inviting guests to a free try speed skating event with Olympic medalists and top coaches ready to show them the ropes.

"Short-track is really exciting to watch, and if you've never seen it, the speeds are just incredible," Brian Boudreau with Park City Speedskating said.

Boudreau is a four-time Olympic Trials competitor and the current Master World Record holder in the 100m for speed skating. He will be coaching at the event.

Guests can bring their own hockey or figure skates, or try out real speed skates. Don't forget to dress warm, gloves and a helmet are a must.

"Casey Dawson, who won a bronze medal, is going to be here," Boudreau said. "He actually started with our team."

Others, including three-time Olympian Nathaniel Mills, former world record holder and three-time Olympic medalist J.R. Celski and Olympic bronze medalist Travis Jaynor, will also be in attendance.

Speed skating feels totally different from regular rink skating. The blades are longer, the turns are sharper and the speed is much faster. However, with a coach by their side, guests don't need to be an expert -- just curious enough to give it a try.

For anyone who has wondered what it feels like to race across the ice like an Olympian -- this is their shot.

The event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. at the Park City Ice Arena.
