Fond tributes are being paid to Eamon Joyce (Senator), Turlough Road, Castlebar, whose death has taken place.
A former member and chairman of Castlebar Urban Council, he died peacefully earlier today in the wonderful care of the staff in Mayo Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.
The news has evoked a tremendous sense of loss in the county town where he was held in such high esteem.
A lifelong member of Fianna Fáil, tributes to him are led by former Mayo TD Beverley Flynn.
She stated: "He was a powerful stalwart of the party in Castlebar, giving years of loyalty and dedication.
"He was a staunch supporter of both my father Padraig and I when we served in Dáil Éireann - and particularly so during election campaigns when he could always be depended upon to canvass with enthusiasm and commitment.
"His work and service was very valued by us and the party and I am really saddened to learn of his passing.
"May his gentle soul rest in peace and my deepest condolences are extended to his family on their loss."
Joining in the tributes, Johnny Mee, who served with him on Castlebar Urban Council, described Eamon as 'a true gentleman who served his community with distinction'.
"He had a tremendous passion for Castlebar and loved to see the town grow.
"Eamon served as chairman of the urban council in 1990/90 and was always constructive and progressive in his approach.
"Eamon was a wonderful character and I always enjoyed his company," he added.
A retired member of the staff of Eircom, he was a long-serving member of Castlebar Mitchels and was an outstanding club officer and volunteer for many years.
Predeceased by his parents Mike and May, he is deeply regretted by his heartbroken family: sister Mary (Coy), brothers Michael and Christopher, brother-in-law Ray, niece Mary (Kane), nephews Stephen and Sean, grand nieces, grand nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.
Eamon will repose in Kilcoyne Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar, on Monday from 5.30 with removal at 7 p.m. to his former residence, Turlough Road, Castlebar.
Removal from his residence on Tuesday morning at 10.30 a.m. for Requiem Mass at 11.30 a.m. in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
Eamon will be laid to rest afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
