Clinics to screen for lead poisoning will be held in the coming weeks after health officials identified four Milwaukee Public Schools with lead hazards.

The Health Department has issued orders to address lead hazards at Golda Meir Lower Campus, Albert E. Kagel Dual Language School, Maryland Avenue Montessori and, this week, Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies.

Trowbridge has been temporarily closed to staff and students this week, the only school so far in which officials took that step in order to address lead issues. Information on when the school could reopen was expected likely later Friday.

A series of screening clinics will be held in the coming weeks to help families determine whether their child has elevated levels of lead in their systems. No amount of lead is safe, particularly for children.

The screening clinics will take place on the following dates and times, according to the Milwaukee Health Department's website:

Parents can also reach out to their pediatricians for lead screening.

Milwaukee Health Commissioner Michael Totoraitis said Friday he hoped to have additional testing clinics.

At the city's clinic on March 15, families will have results within a few minutes from a lead screening based on a finger prick.

If the result shows a need for additional screening, a blood draw will be done the same day. Those tests must go to a lab to be processed, so results will not be available within the same day.

Milwaukee Health Department staff and other clinical partners will be on hand to help parents understand what the tests mean in addition to assisting with any case management or scheduling of primary care follow up appointments, he said.

Blood draws will also take place at the clinics held by Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers.
