Zampa, Inglis ruled out of ODI opener in Perth

Zampa, Inglis ruled out of ODI opener in Perth

Australia will be without two key weapons for their opening match of the ODI series against India in Perth, with Adam Zampa and Josh Inglis both ruled out of Sunday's clash.

Inglis is yet to recover from the calf strain that kept him sidelined for Australia's T20 series in New Zealand earlier this month, while Zampa will miss as he awaits the birth of his child.

With Alex Carey also out of contention for the Optus Stadium fixture, having been released to play Sheffield Shield cricket to aid his Ashes preparations, WA product Josh Philippe is set to earn a wicketkeeping call-up in Perth.

The match will mark Philippe's first international appearance on home soil. The 28-year-old has featured in 12 T20 internationals and three ODIs overseas, and hasn't featured in the latter format since 2021.

Queensland spinner Matt Kuhnemann has also been called into the squad for Perth and is similarly in line to play his first international match in his home country.

Inglis is likely to be in contention to return to action for the last of the three ODI matches against India in Sydney on October 25.

Australian selectors will weigh up whether one or both of star pace veterans Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood make the trip to WA.

Last year's ODI fixture in Perth came much closer to the start of the Aussie Test summer, with that match two weeks out from the Test opener as opposed to a month away from the Ashes beginning.

That fixture raised eyebrows for Australia's decision to keep a host of big names out of playing, with Starc, Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitch Marsh and Travis Head all absent as a second-string line-up was destroyed by Pakistan.
