Normal Police arrest man accused of repeatedly beating and choking woman until she couldn't breathe

MCLEAN COUNTY (25News Now) - McLean County prosecutors have filed a felony domestic battery charge against a 25-year-old man who's accused of punching and choking a woman so many times that she claims to have lost consciousness and could not breathe.

A Normal Police officer, called to an apartment about 1:20 a.m. Saturday, found blood on the woman's mouth, cheek, and on her shirt, according to a document presented to the court. The officer also reportedly saw bruising to the woman's collarbone, under her neck, behind her ear, and to her left knee.

The document said the woman asked John Sidney-Fitzpatrick to leave her apartment, and that he tried to grab her vape.

Sidney-Fitzpatrick allegedly started punching her in the head and face and repeatedly choking her, according to the document.

The report said Sidney-Fitzpatrick was "hitting and choking [the victim] for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, causing [her] to lose consciousness multiple times."

Sidney-Fitzpatrick reportedly denied striking and choking the woman, but he said he pushed her out of the way so that he could leave the residence. Sidney-Fitzgerald explained her facial injuries happened when she fell over a chair.

An ambulance took the woman to a local hospital for treatment.

Charges against Sidney-Fitzgerald include aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony carrying a potential prison sentence of between three and seven years. He's being held in the McLean County Jail.
