Fire destroys pet cremation facility in southeast Calgary

A pet cremation and incineration facility burned down in southeast Calgary on Tuesday morning, with multiple residents reporting heavy smoke and flames billowing from the structure along 114th Avenue S.E.

The structure was already "fully involved" by the time Calgary Fire Department crews were dispatched to the scene at 9:40 a.m., according to a city news release, which added that firefighters were able to contain the blaze by 10:20 a.m.

Due to a lack of fire hydrants in the vicinity, crews used specialized equipment called tenders, which have larger tanks and carry four times more water than a traditional fire engine, to extinguish the blaze.

No injuries have been reported as a result of this fire, the city said. However, the building where the fire originated was completely destroyed. No damage was reported to neighbouring structures.

"Due to a damaged to a gas line, ATCO was called to assist and the gas line has now been shut down," the fire department said.

A fire investigator was also on scene to determine the exact origin and cause of this fire. 'Fire watch' is currently in place.

"The Calgary Fire Department would like to thank all those people who stopped and took the time to quickly call 911," the CFD said. "Fire doubles in size approximately every 30 seconds and thus, every second counts."
