Cool and unsettled weather for Northern California. When to expect rain and snow.

Cool and unsettled weather is in the forecast for Northern California this week. The greatest chance for rain and snow comes on Wednesday, but there is uncertainty around just how much of each the region could see. Wednesday is a KCRA 3 weather Impact Day because of expected travel delays in the mountains and the potential for a few hours of rain in parts of the Valley and Foothills. Before that, Tuesday will be mostly cloudy but also mostly dry. A few sprinkles are possible in the Sacramento Valley and adjacent Foothills around midday. Valley temperatures will stay in the low 60s Tuesday afternoon. Foothills temperatures will peak in the low 50s. Highs around Lake Tahoe will stay in the low to mid 40s. Rain and snow is expected to start on the west slope of the Sierra, including the Foothills south of Highway 50 just before sunrise on Wednesday morning. Chain controls will likely be needed above 4500 feet throughout the day. Travel will be very slow over the summits on Interstate 80 as well as Highway 50 and Highway 88.The snow level will start around 4500' Wednesday morning but could drop as low as 3000' Wednesday night. Places like Pollock Pines and Arnold could see several inches of snow mixing in with rain. There will be a sharp divide between Valley spots that see beneficial measurable rain and spots that stay dry. Modesto, Turlock and Sonora are a few places that could see a few hours of light rain in the morning. Sacramento and areas north will likely be dry most of the day with a few showers Wednesday night into Thursday.
