San Francisco police on Sunday seized six dirt bikes as well as an ATV and arrested four people during a crackdown on stunt driving, the department announced Monday.
Police said over the past several years there has been a significant uptick in illegal dirt bike activity across the Bay Area. Large groups often featuring riders on unregistered and non-street legal dirt bikes have been spotted riding recklessly on public roads and sidewalks.
Of the six dirt bikes seized, four were stolen out of Yuba City, Modesto, Grass Valley and Atascadero, police said. Two of the arrestees were booked for possession of stolen motorcycles, while the other two were cited for driving without licenses and registration.
Officers utilized automated license plate readers, drones, surveillance cameras as well as physical surveillance to help in the vehicle seizures and arrests during the pre-planned operation, police said.
"Anyone who engages is this illegal activity in San Francisco will be held accountable," interim police Chief Paul Yep said in a statement. "Thanks to the hard-working members of the SFPD and the assistance of new technology we can crack down on this behavior like never before."
