Officers charged a driver with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after responding at 8 a.m. on May 9 to a two-vehicle crash on Detroit Road near Cahoon Road. No injuries were reported.
While the officers investigated, they noticed that the man driving the vehicle that struck the other from behind appeared to be in a "daze." The 32-year-old Medina resident also had a felony burglary warrant obtained by the Parma Police Department.
While arresting the man on the warrant, investigators found on the suspect a suspected Adderall pill and what was described as a kratom capsule. The Mayo Clinic's website describes kratom as an herbal supplement sold as an energy booster, mood lifter, and pain reliever. It also describes kratom as "unsafe and ineffective." The FDA's website says kratom is not appropriate for use as a dietary supplement because of the risk of serious adverse events.
An open, cold can of Voodoo Ranger IPA was observed in the center cup holder.
Officers field-tested the suspect and arrested him for OVI. They also cited him for driving with expired plates, failure to maintain an assured clear distance, and having an open container.
Assault: Detroit Road
Officers responded at 1 a.m. on May 10 to Dover Gardens Tavern for a reported assault.
The two men involved were on scene when officers arrived. The men had gotten into a verbal argument inside the bar over interest in a woman, according to a police department statement. The verbal jousting escalated when the 47-year-old Westlake man struck the 45-year-old Avon man in the face.
Alcohol played a role in the incident, according to the police. The Westlake man was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault.
