The Apprentice's Jonny Heaver: 'How I embarrassed myself after Lord Sugar fired me'

The Apprentice's Jonny Heaver: 'How I embarrassed myself after Lord Sugar fired me'

Here Heaver shares his behind the scenes experience of competing on the BBC show, including the tensions that rose back at the house.

I kind of did forget to say thank you to Lord Sugar when he fired me because I feel like Lord Sugar is such a given. I was like, 'Oh, no, I need to thank Lord Sugar as well!' I did kind of forget.

But the bit I'm so happy that didn't make the edit... I pushed the pull door. It was so embarrassing!

I went straight into the door on my way out, so I'm just so happy that it didn't make the edit -- it made my day. One time you cannot push a pull door is when being fired by Lord Sugar, do you know what I mean? It's not the time or the place, so I'm glad I didn't make the edit.

They were kind to me with that -- because I feel like they're not always kind!

Being in the bottom three is terrifying because even with task five -- yes, we all walk back into the boardroom after Dr Jana Denzel quit -- but there's more people to hide behind. There's less of a chance to hide.

When there's three of you, if you, so literally 33% chance of you going; it's wild. There's nothing more scary than that bottom three.

Being in the boardroom, with Tim Campbell, Karren Brady and Lord Sugar; they are actually my heroes, I wasn't lying on the show and I said that. Sitting in front of these three people who I've literally lived up to all my life is an incredibly terrifying experience. It really is terrifying... There are no other words for it.

As individuals, they're actually not that scary. It's more the experience.

Someone had to go in this task and it's slightly difficult because there wasn't one person to really blame. I do think Frederick [Afrifa] had a lot to answer for, because I think the way in which he split down the pricing into core components put a massive amount of pressure on us to deliver.

But at the end of the day, someone had to go. I didn't think I was going till very late on. In the task, I thought I'd smashed it.

When it was the bottom three and I saw Fred and Chis [Chisola Chitambala], I was like, 'Do you know what, I picture these two in the final, I think I'm gone.' You saw me smiling because I knew in that last minute, 'Yeah, my time was up.'

Our tour was boring. It was. I hold my hands up, but what can I do?

I'm taking these high paying guests to a rock with a view -- yes, it had a lovely view -- but unless I started juggling with pine cones, there was nothing I could do to entertain them other than just try and inject it with as much personality as I could.

So I feel like with the limited resources and options we had at the rock, I felt like we did what we could. I just felt like it wasn't very inspiring at all. But I think where we did do well, even if it was boring, was we managed to adapt to them; they wanted to cut it short and we were like, 'Do you know what, we'll go with you. Let's get you to the next place quickly.' We did act quickly to their kind of feedback.

I'm not gonna lie: I was completely gutted to be going home.

I really, really wanted to get to the final five because I completely believe in my business and I was desperate for it to get that scrutiny from the heavyweights.

I'm really good at leaving what happened in The Apprentice boardroom at the door, before going back to the house. I'm not gonna lie, I think some of the candidates are better than others.

And I think I'm good at that because I'm into having a different professional makeup to my personal life. I really am a big believer in separating the two.

That's really applicable in the house as well, because you don't want to bring that boardroom controversy or anger back home with you, cause it's our safe space.

But I do think some people are perhaps a little bit better at doing that than others. On the whole, we did really get on in the house. But sometimes after task, it was a little bit warm -- just for a little bit. We made up in the end. I'm not gonna mention any names!

The fact we're all friends now is a good testament to it not being that bad. It was a little bit of anger for a couple of hours... The next day, it's a new task.

I've made friends for life on this process 100% and I can't think of anyone from the process that I wouldn't meet up with happily tomorrow if they asked. At least five of them I know will be friends for life so I'm very, very lucky. I'm really close with Amber-Rose [Badrunin]. We've become completely inseparable.

What's next? I have massive plans for my tutoring business, we're at a real time of growth which is super exciting for the company. We are still seeking investment, so if there's any investors out there who want to invest money in a fast growing education company -- come my way!

I want to implement the business plan (even if it's not with Lord Sugar's investment) with someone else's investment or with external funding in some way. I'm super excited about the growth we're going through at the moment and I just want to see that continue.
