Superheroes make special visit to pediatric patients at Hoops Family Children's Hospital

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) -- Superheroes delivered a dose of smiles through the windows of pediatric patients at Marshall Health Network-Hoops Family Children's Hospital on Friday.

Heroes like Spiderman, Ironman and Thor rappelled down the hospital facade, waving into pediatric room windows before making their way inside to meet patients.

This is the second year employees from High Access Window Cleaning, an Ohio-based company, swapped their regular uniforms for their favorite superhero costumes to entertain patients, according to a news release from the hospital.

"Our goal is to make sure kids still get to feel like kids, even when they're in the hospital," Carleigh Cazad Francis, Child Life Coordinator and music therapist at Hoops Family Children's Hospital, said in the news release. "When our patients see superheroes outside their window, it gives them a moment to forget about treatment and just smile. Those moments of joy and play are a vital part of healing."

Those playing the part of the superheroes said it is a special opportunity for them to help brighten the patients' day.

"Being able to do this for the patients here means the world," Aaron Masters, window technician with High Access Window Cleaning, said. "Anything we can do to help them a little bit when they are going through hard things is special. We can uplift them and bring them hope in hard times."

Child life specialists in the Child Life Department at HFCH support patients and families and promote effective coping through play, preparation, education and self-expression activities.
