Current Conditions
Over the past week, the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed in twelve samples collected along Florida's Coasts. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were present in two samples from Gulf County. We continue to use satellite imagery (USF and NOAA NCCOS) to help track nearshore and offshore conditions. Imagery from October 8 revealed elevated chlorophyll levels in Northwest Florida in Gulf County (St. Joseph Bay), Franklin County, and alongshore from southern Dixie to Levy counties.
Additional details are provided below.
* In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in one sample collected from Manatee County.
* In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at low concentrations in one sample collected from Bay County and background to medium concentrations in nine samples collected from Gulf County.
* Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in one sample collected from St. Johns County.
Fish kills suspected to be related to red tide were reported to FWC's Fish Kill Hotline or other partners over the past week in Northwest Florida (Gulf County).
Respiratory Irritation suspected to be related to red tide was not reported over the past week in Florida. For forecasts that use FWC and partner data, please visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Gulf Coast Harmful Algal Blooms Forecast.
Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides from Bay County to northern Monroe County predict net western to southwestern transport of surface waters and eastern to southeastern transport of subsurface waters in most areas over the next 3.5 days.
The next status report will be issued on Friday, October 17. Please check our daily sampling map, which can be accessed via the online status report on our Red Tide Current Status page. For more information on algal blooms and water quality, please visit Protecting Florida Together.
