The "Holiness to the Lord" panel, located above the east center tower of the Salt Lake Temple, has been restored and repainted, according to a temple renovation update provided Thursday by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Other recent renovation work on the temple has included removing the scaffolding found in the temple's assembly room and installing chandeliers in the temple's north sealing wing.
The progressing renovation on the Salt Lake Temple is "revealing both beautiful craftsmanship and deep historical connections to faith in Jesus Christ and the sacrifices of early (Latter-day Saints)," said the church in its update.
A panel with the words "Holiness to the Lord" inscribed on it is found on each of the church's more than 200 dedicated temples, making reference to the instruction Moses received to engrave the same words upon a "plate of pure gold" for the high priest's clothing.
Work to restore and regild the Salt Lake Temple's "Holiness to the Lord" panel was complicated, explained Anne Domenech, an artist with Evergreen who oversaw the panel's restoration.
"The technical process was to clean the plaque because it had been destroyed by the weather," she said.
Yet, changes in climate and the sun made for a complicated process, as they interfered with the drying process required after Domenech had both prepared the surface and applied the gold, she said.
Still, she explained that knowing the panel's history made the process moving and "almost holy" for her.
"I was told about the story of the sculptor, and that moved me to the bottom of my soul," she said. "I was there, putting gold leaf on what (John Rowe Moyle) had touched and engraved and sculpted in the wall of the temple. From that moment, everything became almost holy."
An accomplished stonecutter and English convert to the church, Moyle traveled to the Salt Lake Valley with a handcart company in the 1800s, after which he dedicated much of his time to the construction of the Salt Lake Temple.
For instance, Moyle would walk 22 miles from Alpine to Salt Lake each Monday morning to work on the temple and not return home until late each Friday evening. Then, after suffering a severe leg injury that ultimately required amputation, Moyle carved out his own wooden leg, later returning to the temple site to engrave the words: "Holiness to the Lord."
Scaffolding has been removed from the large assembly room located on the fifth floor of the Salt Lake Temple, opening way for finish work to take place.
The temple's assembly room was designed to hold large gatherings and special meetings, and is where church leaders meet for counsel and instruction, according to the temple's renovation update.
In the north sealing wing, workers have installed chandeliers in each of the north addition sealing rooms, while the rooms' altars are in the process of being gilded.
Stonework and window trim are also being placed in the north sealing wing, according to the update.
As an addition to the temple, the north sealing wing will accommodate additional sealing rooms and increase the capacity of the Salt Lake Temple. It is connected to the temple via its north wall.
