Reader photo pick of the week: Stripes

Reader photo pick of the week: Stripes

From Robert Peterson of Summerville, "We recently took a trip to the small island of Staffa on the West coast of Scotland. There we went by boat to Fingal's Cave. It is a formation of basalt columns made by rapidly cooling volcanic lava. The area is similar to and related geologically to the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. The columns form naturally occurring stripes of stone."

We are surrounded with stunning patterns found throughout urban and rural environments, both man-made and natural formations. What might seem to be a colorfully-striped design on a tie, can also be seen as a natural camouflage for a bright butterfly.

This week, we asked our readers to send in photos highlighting the pattern of stripes in our daily lives.

The winner this week is Robert Peterson of Summerville with a photo of a stony rockface in Ireland.

Honorable mentions go to Reid Schuster of Athens, Ga. with an amazing photo of some beautiful zebras in Kenya, and Michael Pitstick of Charleston who sent in a dramatic ripple effect seen at Laurel Hill County Park.

Next week's topic is "kaleidoscope." So, send in photos resembling the boggling perspectives and colors of a kaleidoscope.

The rules. Send your best photo to [email protected] by noon Thursday. Include your name and town, and a description of where the photo was taken. Be sure to add the topic to the file. If you want your photo to be eligible to run in the newspaper, it must be at least 1,500 pixels, not have a commercial watermark and not have been published in another publication. No photoshop allowed.

On Fridays, we first announce the editors' pick of the week at postandcourier.com/yourphotos and declare a topic for the next week. On Saturdays, we publish an online gallery.

On Sunday, the photo pick of the week will appear in this section, Life.

All photos submitted will be considered for publication in The Post and Courier's yearly magazine, My Charleston. Some images may be selected for other editorial or noncommercial use.
