Grandfather accused of 'drugging' Dairy Queen Blizzards given to his grandchildren

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) - A North Carolina man is facing charges for allegedly drugging Dairy Queen Blizzards that were given to his two grandchildren.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, 66-year-old James Yokeley flagged down a police officer at a Sheetz gas station on Aug. 8.

Yokeley told the officer that his granddaughters had found two pills in the ice cream they had purchased at a Dairy Queen on Oleander Drive.

"Medical personnel checked the two juveniles," police stated in a press release. "It was determined that they had not ingested any of the substances."

Officers reported that the blue pressed pills were tested in the field and found to contain MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, and cocaine.

During the investigation, the police department said it found video footage that showed Yokeley being the person who put the two pills into the children's ice cream.

Yokeley was arrested and charged with two counts of felony contaminating food or drink with a controlled substance, child abuse and possession of Schedule I narcotics.

Yokeley appeared in court on Wednesday and waived his right to a court-appointed attorney. He's not allowed to have contact with the two children involved.

Yokeley was selected as chair of the Surry County Board of Elections in June.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections said it is aware of the charges against Yokeley it will continue to collect information about the situation.

Authorities said the incident remains under investigation.
