LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - It's a good old fashioned hate game and one of the oldest in the state: Lawton High vs. Eisenhower.
This rivalry stretches generations dating all the way back to the mid-1960s and since then, Lawton high has had the upper-hand, leading the series all time 37 to 28.
But in recent years, it's been the Eagles who have been soaring over the Wolverines and in Head Coach Lorenzo Williams' second year, the Wolverines are ready to turn the tides.
"I hate IKE," said quarterback Nijuon Polk. "Can't wait to beat them Week 0. That's my thoughts on that."
The Wolverines are all about a little less talking and a little more action ahead of their kickoff against IKE.
Coach Williams says the winner of the first game is always who wins the turnover battle and he's had his guys working to make sure they do just that.
The Wolverines know it's a rivalry game... but they're treating the Eagles as just another team they have to go through.
"Really just, gotta go out there and play hard," running back Keiston Rosado stated. "I'm not really, I don't think the team is really worried about IKE. So I mean, I feel like we're going to go out there and get the dub."
"It's a rivalry," added wide receiver Dominque Campbell. "But I don't feel like, you know, us as a team is really worried about it. We're worried about district games but we would like to start the season off with a win."
It's strong words from Lawton High but in a rivalry where the schools are less than 2 and a half miles away as the Eagle flies; it's going to get personal.
"For me, I came from Eisenhower actually," middle linebacker Raheem Ellzey said. "Last year I transferred here. So it's a little personal over there. But I'm not really too worried about them. I know what I'm supposed to do."
Coach Williams got his first experience of the rivalry last year that ended with the Wolverines on the wrong side of a 35-28 affair.
Since then, he's come to know what Wolverine Nation expects.
"It's a big deal man," Coach Williams voiced. "I tell you what, I lost that game last year and I got stopped at the gas station, stopped at Walmart. stopped at the theatre and everyone wants to know if we're going to beat IKE this year. So I told them we're going to give it our best shot."
