Dodgers' Dave Roberts Reveals What's Wrong With Tommy Edman Amid Struggles

The Los Angeles Dodgers are nursing a slew of injuries this season as they look to become baseball's first back-to-back champions in a quarter-century.

One of the most recent stars who had to miss time on the injured list, 2024 NLCS MVP Tommy Edman, hasn't quite been the same since his return, batting just .148 compared to a .252 average before his time off. Manager Dave Roberts spoke on what he believes is happening to the utility man during his rough path.

"Even a little bit before he went on the IL," Roberts said. "I think he wasn't particularly in a good spot and that's right-handed and left-handed. I think there's certainly a lot more chase below from Tommy. There's a couple little things that he could potentially change I think to get him in a better spot."

In the 10 games before hitting the IL, Edman had a slash line of .211/.273/.421 with an OPS of .694.

Roberts previously spoke on his reasoning for giving the struggling Michael Conforto such a long leash, and attributed most of it to the work that Conforto has put in regarding his bat path.

Similarly, Edman ranks among the 88th percentile in MLB of percentage of hits at the ideal launch angle (between 8-32 degrees) and on the sweet-spot of the bat. Conversely, he is a below average hard-hit percentage hitter as just 42.7 percent of his hits are over 95 mph.

"I think it's swing mechanics. I don't think it's the health part," Roberts said. "I think it's swing mechanics."

Edman appears to be fully healthy according to his manager and the team's decision to let him play as much as he has post-IL confirms that, but the organization will likely tinker with his mechanics and help him get back to the same effectiveness he started the season with, when he was one of baseball's best hitters.
