Paige Bueckers' first three games as a WNBA rookie are in the books, and although she hasn't played well, her potential is obvious.
She was the No. 1 pick in last month's draft after leading the UConn Huskies to the women's NCAA championship, and she has a chance to become the next superstar to enter the pros.
On Wednesday against the Minnesota Lynx in her native Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Bueckers shot just 3-of-11 from the field, but she had her first double-double in the WNBA with 12 points and 10 assists.
Lynx forward Napheesa Collier, who had 28 points, talked about Bueckers' potential afterward.
"I think Paige is gonna be really good," Collier said. "She's a three-level scorer. She's a great passer. Rookie year is really hard, so I just tell her there's going to be ups and downs, but from what I've seen, she's staying aggressive in these first couple of games, so I tell her to keep doing that and lead the team."
Bueckers averaged 19.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.6 assists a game while shooting 53.1% from the field and 42.3% from 3-point range in four seasons with UConn.
She had to overcome a torn ACL that forced her to miss the entire 2022-23 season, but she came back an even better player, and she has been described as a generational talent by numerous experts.
Her ability to score efficiently from all three levels, especially from the mid-range area of the dribble, makes her a dangerous player. Combined with her threat as a facilitator and passer, she could have many All-Star game selections in her future.
The Wings went just 9-31 last year and have finished with a winning record just once in the previous nine seasons. They have badly needed a player of Bueckers' caliber, and now they will have the opportunity to build a team around one of basketball's brightest young talents.
