The San Francisco 49ers had a season high on Sunday -- and not the kind you want.
Referee Scott Novak's crew called 11 penalties against them that totaled 90 yards and helped stretch the game to 3 hours, 7 minutes. That includes three late-hit penalties on the defense, all of which Kyle Shanahan said Monday were legitimate, even the "baby shove" Deommodore Lenoir committed after being goaded at the end of a play.
"It doesn't always get called," Shanahan said. "But if it does, you're at fault. You're not allowed to do that and hurt our team."
The 90 penalty yards were more than the 49ers' rushing total against the Miami Dolphins. They were outrushed for the eighth time this season, 166-81, and lost the time of possession battle 33:06 to 26:54.
The defense played 67 snaps, the offense played 64. Here's how the individual snaps were divided.
Quarterback: Brock Purdy 64
Purdy did not do well under pressure Sunday and felt the heat 17 times against the Dolphins. Per Pro Football Focus, he completed only 4 of 11 passes in that situation and threw a fourth-quarter interception with defensive tackle Calais Campbell bearing down on him. Two of his incompletions were drops by tailback Patrick Taylor Jr.
As they went through warmups, the tailback pecking order was Taylor, Israel Abanikanda and Ke'Shawn Vaughn. Vaughn, however, was limited to special teams while Abanikanda and backup quarterback Brandon Allen were the only 49ers in uniform who didn't play a snap.
Samuel served as the de facto No. 2 tailback. His 10 snaps in the backfield tied a season high (Week 1 vs. New York Jets).
Taylor, the fourth tailback to start a game for the 49ers this season, got only eight carries for 24 yards and struggled as a pass catcher with one slip and two drops. The 49ers seemed to trade the run game for the screen game; they called a season-high eight screens Sunday, all but one of which was successful.
Shanahan said Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) was trending well and is expected to practice this week.
Receiver: Jauan Jennings 60, Ricky Pearsall 46, Samuel 43, Chris Conley 10, Jacob Cowing 4
Of Samuel's 96 receiving yards, 93 came after the catch. It was his best YAC performance since he had 115 yards in a blowout win over the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
Pearsall was targeted four times in the first half, catching all four passes for 37 yards. He was not targeted at all in the second half.
Tight end: George Kittle 63, Eric Saubert 10, Brayden Willis 1
Kittle, who finished with 106 receiving yards, now has 20 games with 100 or more yards in his career. That ranks third in franchise history behind Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (66) and Terrell Owens (25).
Saubert's fourth-quarter touchdown was his first since Sept. 18, 2022, when he caught one for the Denver Broncos. Saubert now has three touchdowns in 10 NFL seasons. All three 49ers tight ends were on the field for Sunday's score.
Offensive line: Jake Brendel 64, Dominick Puni 64, Colton McKivitz 64, Aaron Banks 46, Jaylon Moore 33, Spencer Burford 31, Nick Zakelj 18
The 49ers will have to make several moves this week, including looking at other teams' practice squads, after suffering three more injuries along the line. Shanahan said Banks (MCL sprain) and Moore (quadriceps strain) will miss the final two games while Burford suffered a calf injury that was being evaluated Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Trent Williams (heel/ankle) will not play in the final two games, Shanahan said. That means the only healthy tackle on the roster is McKivitz, although Puni and Zakelj played the position in college.
"We've got to get five out there, so we've got to make some decisions on some possible guards, too," Shanahan said. "So hopefully we'll get some good news on Burford, but if not we'll probably have to add some people from other (teams') practice squads. I'm sure we've been working on that already."
The only offensive lineman the 49ers had in reserve in the fourth quarter Sunday was newcomer Austen Pleasants, a guard the team signed to the active roster Saturday.
Shanahan said the dearth of offensive linemen might affect his play calling but not his decision to play Purdy behind a makeshift line.
"We've got to go out, we've got two games here," Shanahan said. "Whatever we do, we're gonna put a team together as best as we can to win. No, I'm not thinking that way."
Defensive line: Nick Bosa 56, Maliek Collins 41, Yetur Gross-Matos 35, Jordan Elliott 32, Leonard Floyd 30, Evan Anderson 29, Kalia Davis 22, Sam Okuayinonu 21, Alex Barrett 4
For the third time in four weeks, the 49ers recorded no sacks. They also had just six quarterback pressures, per Pro Football Focus, the second fewest they've had all season (five vs. the Buffalo Bills in Week 13).
Quarterback pressures:
Linebacker: Fred Warner 67, Dee Winters 51, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles 20, Dre Greenlaw 4
Greenlaw was unable to make it through the initial defensive series before his right calf began feeling tight and it's unknown whether he will take part in any of the final two games. Shanahan said he hasn't spoken to Greenlaw yet but that "his gut" is to shut him down for the rest of the season.
"It's something that Dre understands, but his passion and his heart really want to get out there," Shanahan said. "That's why I say that I'm leaning toward 'no.' But I've got to get more information on that to make sure that's the right decision for Dre."
A week after finishing with a career-high 15 tackles, Warner had 11 against the Dolphins. He has 117 tackles on the season, joining the Baltimore Ravens' Roquan Smith as the only players since 2000 to register 115 or more tackles in each of their first seven NFL seasons.
While Samuel had PFF's highest grade for a 49ers offensive player, Winters had that honor for the defense. The speedy linebacker was especially effective in pass defense, allowing catches on six of seven targets for 35 yards and recording a pass breakup. His 51 snaps were a career high.
Cornerback: Lenoir 67, Charvarius Ward 67, Renardo Green 55, Isaac Yiadom 3
The standout among the cornerbacks was Green, who finished with a career-high 10 tackles. He was targeted eight times in the passing game and allowed five catches for 69 yards. Two of the incompletions came in the end zone on passes to Malik Washington and Tyreek Hill. Green has allowed just two touchdowns this season.
Safety: Malik Mustapha 67, Talanoa Hufanga 62, Ji'Ayir Brown 4, Tashaun Gipson Sr. 3
It wasn't a good game for the 49ers safeties in run defense. Hufanga took a bad angle on De'Von Achane's 50-yard touchdown run at game's end while Mustapha had two missed tackles.
It used to be that the 49ers prided themselves on holding opposing runners under 100 yards. Achane is the fourth runner to surpass that mark in the last five games:
Special teams: Yiadom 24, Willis 21, Barrett 21, Saubert 21, Conley 17, Graham 17, McCloud 17, Flannigan-Fowles 17, Brown 14, Winters 14, Samuel 8, Jake Moody 8, Pat O'Donnell 7, Taybor Pepper 7, Hufanga 7, Warner 7, Mustapha 7, Lenoir 7, Anderson 7, Elliott 6, Gross-Matos 6, Collins 5, Gipson 5, McKivitz 4, Puni 4, Burford 4, Zakelj 4, Davis 3, Pleasants 2, Cowing 2, Moore 2, Brendel 1, Okuayinonu 1
Moody's miss from 41 yards out in the third quarter was his seventh miss of the season (23-of-30). All of his misses have come on the road.
Moody missed four field goals as a rookie last year (21-of-25). All but one of those misses came on the road.
His field goal percentage of 76.7 ranks 30th among kickers with at least 12 attempts this season.
