Power Poll: It's a rising Tide; Astros, Bulldogs stay 1-2

Power Poll: It's a rising Tide; Astros, Bulldogs stay 1-2

Welcome to the Top 10, Crimson Tide.

The Concord High football team, on the heels of a 27-14 victory at Londonderry High, is the No. 9 team in the Union Leader Football Power Poll. The Tide, which this season hadn't received any votes before Monday, collected 13 votes from a panel of statewide voters.

The Tide were sparked by junior running back Colin Savard, who rushed for 137 yards including a key, 67-yard sideline dash to put the game away in the final minutes.

The Lancers, last season's Division I state runners-up, took momentum from a season-opening win at Alvirne into Friday night's game. With the loss, they dropped from the poll's No. 4 spot into a tie (with Winnacunnet) for No. 10.

"They're a program that knows how to win," said Concord coach Jim Corkum. "They (the Lancers) have proven that year in and year out. And they're still going to win a lot of games this year and they're going to be in the playoffs and who knows, maybe we'll see them again.

"But we still have a lot we have to take care of. We still have a lot of our schedule left to play and we have to take care of business."

This coming Friday, Londonderry hosts No. 4 Exeter (2-0) while Concord (1-1) visits 0-2 Manchester Central at Gill Stadium.

Pinkerton (2-0) remained in the poll's top spot this week while Bedford, which prevailed in a showdown with No. 3 Nashua South, stayed at No. 2. This coming Friday, Pinkerton will visit new No. 3 Salem, which jumped from the sixth spot after a second straight triumph.

Other movers and shakers in this week's poll were Bishop Guertin, which jumped from No. 7 to No. 5, and No. 7 Manchester Memorial, up from No. 9. Both were lopsided winners last weekend.
