Mother claimed fatal burning, beating, shaking of newborn baby was 'not all that serious'

NORFOLK, Va. (WKRC) - A mother pled guilty to abusing her 9-day-old newborn to the point of death, despite initially calling the fatal injuries the baby suffered "not all that serious."

According to a release from the Norfolk Police Department, 23-year-old Hilary D. Johnson and 21-year-old Zibreyea S. Parker were arrested on May 4, 2024 after they brought their unresponsive 9-day-old child to the hospital.

The infant reportedly showed "signs of abuse" and was soon pronounced dead by hospital staff.

According to arrest warrants obtained by local outlet WTKR, the newborn suffered "severe burns on both feet as well as splash burns on other areas of her body," as well as "several bruises on her head, broken ribs, a broken clavicle and exhibited symptoms of a shaken baby."

When the child's mother, Parker, was asked about the child's injuries, she said she "did not think the injuries were all that serious" and attempted to treat them with home remedies, per the warrants.

The child's grandfather and Johnson's father, allegedly told police that he did not think Parker or his son was fit to take care of the child after it was born, and feared for the kid's safety, according to Law&Crime. This was in part due to the fact that Parker and Johnson were homeless and living in a tent near an interstate, per WTKR.

Johnson and Parker were initially both charged with second-degree murder. Johnson, now 22, pled guilty to that charge in early August, but Parker, now 24, entered a guilty plea for child abuse with serious injury instead.
