NEW YORK -- Yankees ace Max Fried had a visitor on the mound in the top of the fourth inning of a scoreless game against the Red Sox on Friday night.
No, it wasn't Yankees manager Aaron Boone or pitching coach Matt Blake. All four infielders stayed put behind Fried as well.
It was a squirrel.
The squirrel emerged near the Red Sox dugout on the third-base line, running into Boston's rookie outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia before making his way to the mound.
Fried then stood and watched the squirrel make himself at home, standing for a few moments on the dirt before scampering off toward first base.
It got close to Ben Rice seconds later, but moved around him, scooting into foul territory down the right-field line.
Here's a few separate videos of the incident, a bizarre scene that stopped Friday night's game for a few minutes:
Eventually play resumed, but the squirrel wasn't done.
It ran back onto the field for the final few pitches of the inning. The squirrel was in fair territory on the right field grass relatively close to right fielder Cody Bellinger while Red Sox second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out to Anthony Volpe at shortstop to end the frame.
Television cameras even picked up the squirrel munching on what seemed to be a peanut on the warning track in right field.
