MITCHELL,.S.D. (KELO) - This Memorial Day, staff at a restaurant in Mitchell are honoring our nations' heroes with a special table and a keepsake.
On the outside, the Pizza Hut in Mitchell looks the same as always.
But on the inside, customers are greeted with some extra red, white and blue added to the color scheme.
"We have a lot of Pizza Hut employees in our company and customers that are military, veterans, and we're really proud of all of them," general manager Kim Vilhauer said.
This Pizza Hut's patriotism doesn't end with the colors, though.
In the back, you'll find a special table dedicated to fallen and missing soldiers.
"Our Missing Soldier's Table helps people realize what this day means," Vilhauer said.
On the table there's a poem highlighting the importance of each element - a white table cloth representing the purity of intentions when answering the call to serve. A single rose to remind us of the blood shed and those still missing - as well as a lemon slice representing their bitter fate and a salt shaker symbolizing the tears shed by their loved ones.
Also on this table are two flags - one folded and one made of wood - each with their own special meanings.
"My dad was in the Navy so the flag on the table is from my dad that was presented to me," Vilhauer said. "When I look at that flag, I cry because it means a lot to me. Cassidy, my boss, made the wooden flag because he was in the Navy."
As customers leave from their meals, they can also take something with them to continue remembering those who have served our country.
"At our counter we have the 'Take a Soldier' where they can take a little soldier with them to have as a keepsake," Vilhauer said. "You know, if they've got somebody that's not home, overseas or somebody that they're missing."
Honoring all of our nation's heroes today and beyond.
Vilhauer says she plans to keep the Missing Soldier's Table set up for another week.
