NORTH AUGUSTA -- Just as the Charleston RiverDogs seemed poised to snap a six-game losing skid, everything fell apart in the ninth inning.
With two runs in and the RiverDogs' lead cut to one, Andy Rodriguez (1-2) was still one out away from escaping trouble and ending the slide. But Mason Guerra blasted a walk-off two-run homer to left-center field to extend Charleston's woes as the Augusta GreenJackets rallied for a 6-5 win on May 24 at SRP Park.
Charleston's Wooyeoul Shin and Brailer Guerrero homered as part of a three-run third inning, helping to back a strong start from Jose Urbina. The RiverDogs (19-25) added a run the following inning on Angel Mateo's RBI double, then tacked on another in the seventh on an RBI single by Jose Perez to go up 5-2, a lead that stayed that way until the ninth.
Back-to-back-to-back singles by the GreenJackets (24-19) off Rodriguez cut the RiverDogs' lead to three. A double play groundout scored another run as the RiverDogs nursed a 5-4 lead with two outs.
After Douglas Glod walked and was replaced by a pinch runner, Rodriguez had an 0-1 count on Guerra, who belted the walk-off two-run homer.
Urbina went six innings, allowing two runs on just three hits and two walks while striking out four in a no-decision. Kaleb Corbett tossed two scoreless innings, striking out three in relief.
Trailing 1-0, Charleston knotted it up in the third on Shin's second home run of the season, coming with one out. After the second out, Narciso Polanco walked and stole second base. Guerrero followed with a two run blast to right center, his third of the season.
The teams play again in the series finale on May 25 at 6:05 p.m.
