Notre Dame vs. Miami weather updates: Heavy rain in forecast for Week 1 college football matchup

Notre Dame and Miami are two of college football's grandest programs. Given their intertwining history with one another and their prestige -- both sides are ranked in the top-10 to start the season -- their Week 1 matchup was always destined to captivate.

And yet, arguably the biggest storyline in Sunday's fixture has little to do with the teams themselves. The forecast for Sunday's game is ominous, with heavy rain and howling winds expected to descend on Hard Rock Stadium.

That could have implications on the game's start time. It also could impact Marcus Freeman and Mario Cristobal's respective game plans throughout the contest.

Here's what you need to know about the weather forecast for the Fighting Irish and Hurricanes' clash at Hard Rock Stadium.

5:45 p.m.: The Hurricanes were forced to cancel their usual pre-game walk into the stadium. But they're on the premises 90 minutes before kickoff.

5:20 p.m.: We're two hours from kickoff and torrential rain continues to take hold of the stadium.

4:45 p.m.: Parts of Hard Rock Stadium have been affected by flooding, it seems.

4:35 p.m.: A special weather statement has been issued until 5 p.m. ET for much of Miami-Dade County, including Miami Gardens, where Hard Rock Stadium is located.

4:30 p.m.: A fearsome rain has taken hold of Hard Rock Stadium three hours ahead of kickoff. People are still (somehow) tailgating. But torrential rain looks like it could have an impact on Sunday night's game.
