Fargo man struck tree, injured in northern Minnesota crash

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Minn. -- Two men were taken to a hospital after striking a tree in Beltrami County in northern Minnesota.

According to a release from the Minnesota State Patrol, Marty W. Funmaker, 24, of Fargo, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on U.S. Highway 71 at 7:31 p.m. Friday, May 16, in Summit Township, when his vehicle left the road to the left and struck a tree.

Funmaker and passenger Avery James Smith, 18, of Redby, Minnesota, were both taken to a Sanford hospital for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. Both were wearing seat belts. The road was wet at the time, the release said.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Blackduck Ambulance and Blackduck Fire Department also responded to the crash.

Summit Township is roughly 30 miles northeast of Bemidji.
