The San Francisco 49ers have some competition for free agent defensive end Joey Bosa, but neither team is backing up the Brinks truck for the five-team Pro Bowler.
The Athletic's Mike Silver on Monday reported both the 49ers and Miami Dolphins are offering Bosa a contract in free agency. Neither reported offer reaches the $10 million mark.
It's clear the 49ers are intent on not breaking the bank in free agency, and an offer of less than $10 million for Bosa would be a clear indication of their free agency plan. They're looking for bargain bin prices to fill out the edges of a roster that's seen a mass exodus in free agency. Bosa appeals to them, but only as an inexpensive option and presumed rotational pass rusher. That fills a pretty significant need and gives the team more financial flexibility moving forward.
While the financial considerations make sense, they're for naught if they keep the 49ers from making any significant additions. A player like Bosa can help them, but the pickings in that price range in free agency are slim and the likelihood of finding a significant better player at that cost is low.
It's understandable they're trying to control spending, but if the difference between getting Bosa or not is a $10 million deal, they should have no problem climbing the ladder and getting the contract done.
