One killed in Columbus South Side house fire, blaze also damages home next door

One person is dead after a blaze broke out Friday evening at a home on Columbus' South Side.

The Columbus Division of Fire responded just after 5 p.m. to a report of a fire at a two-story, two-family home in the 700 block of East Stewart Avenue, Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter said Friday.

Geitter confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim is not being identified pending positive identification and notification of family.

No other injuries were reported. Geitter could not immediately say how many people were inside of the homes when the fire broke out.

The blaze also damaged the house next door, according to Geitter.

Fire division investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze, he said.
