Is tonight's comet visible? Green-hued, best come of year Lemmon will be visible tonight

The retirement of the ISS in 2030 has created an opportunity for commercial space travel. How will they shape this next phase of exploration?

* Two comets are converging in the night sky this month

* You can see an online livestream of the comets via the Virtual Telescope Project later this week

* The comets are called C/2025 A4 (Lemmon), and C/2025 R2 (SWAN)

Two comets are going to reach their closest approach to Earth this week around the same time, and they promise to be spectacular.

Comets are called C/2025 A4 (Lemmon), and C/2025 R2 (SWAN), according to Space.com.

"Having two right comets visible in the sky around the same time is a rare cosmic treat," Space.com states.

Lemmon is a particluar treat. Newly discovered on Jan. 3 at the Mount Lemmon Survey near Tucson, Arizona, it's the "best and brightest" comet we will be able to see from Earth this year, experts have said. The other treat? It's tail is green. Yes, green.

As the sun melts the ice that make up the comet and ice becomes a gas, it's creating a distinctive green color in the night sky.

The comet won't be visible again for over 1,000 years, according to astronomers.

What's the RI weather forecast?

The skies are expected to be mostly clear tonight, according to AccuWeather, which should make for good viewing.

How far away are the comets?

Comet Lemmon will pass about 56 million miles from Earth, while Comet Swan will be about 24 million miles away from Earth.

When is the best time to see the comets?

The peak of brightness for both comets is tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, as this is when they will be closest to the sun.

However, the comets will remain visible for the rest of October and into November.

Space.com explained that Lemmon will be visible in the night sky until Nov. 3, while Swan will be visible through the whole month of November.

"Lemmon is visible in a pair of binoculars or small telescopes in the western evening sky after sunset, slowly climbing higher each night as it moves northward," Space.com stated.

The website also noted that Swan "is best viewed in the predawn sky, when the comet appears low on the eastern horizon." Stargazers can use a telescope or binoculars to see this comet.

When is the livestream of the comets and where can people see it?

The livestream will be held on the Space.com website at 1:30 p.m. eastern time on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025.

You can also watch the livestream on the Virtual Telescope Project website or the project's YouTube channel.
