HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - Doctors say the back to school season can cause the flu to show up early in Connecticut.
While there are different opinions about vaccines, doctors say the flu shot will not give someone the flu.
They confirmed the flu vaccine is the best way to keep kids and families protected this season.
The State Department of Health is already tracking new flu cases in Connecticut, which could be an indication this season may hit harder than usual.
Middlesex Health Epidemiologist and Infectious Disease expert, Dr. Alina Filozov, said there's a reason why pharmacies urge people to book their flu shots in early September.
"The key to getting a flu shot is to try to get the flu shot before the season starts. And every year it's a guessing game," said Dr. Filozov.
It could take about two weeks for the body to be protected from the flu after getting the vaccine. Experts said the shot could shield someone for about four months.
"October, November, December, and January, these are the highest months of flu activity you should be well protected," added Dr. Filozov.
The newest version of the flu shot is trivalent, meaning it covers three different strains of the virus.
It is recommended for anyone 6 months and older.
According to the new FDA regulations, this shot is thimerosal free.
"It's safe and effective," explained Dr. Filozov.
However, there are other options for those who do not like needles.
"There will also be a spray, an internasal spray which is a vaccine that will be available even in the pharmacies and it can be given to patients up to the age of 49," she said.
Flumist can be delivered to someone's home without a prescription.
Doctors said either method of protection is the smartest way to remain healthy this flu season.
"Every year, unfortunately, we have statistics in death in children of death in adults and it's skewed to more elderly and more ill adults," Dr. Filozov added.
A flu shot may not stop every case, but it can make symptoms milder.
Experts also recommended that people wash their hands, avoid others who are sick, and stay home when not feeling well.
