Wisconsin DHS finds community spread of measles in Oconto County, total cases rise to 14

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Friday identified five new cases of measles in Oconto County, raising the total number of cases in the county to 14.

An ongoing investigation indicates that the disease is spreading locally, and the DHS is working with Oconto County Public Health and surrounding health departments to identify and notify those who might have been exposed.

Those who are unvaccinated or don't know their vaccination status are most at risk. If you think you may have been exposed and aren't immune, stay home and monitor for symptoms like a high fever, cough, and tiny white spots on the inside of the mouth.

If you do develop measles symptoms, call your doctor's office or clinic before visiting.

Measles is highly contagious, but is also vaccine-preventable. It can be spread from person-to-person through the air and can stay in the air for two hours after an infected person coughs or sneezes.
