Indonesia to Auction 2.6 GHz Spectrum for 5G Network Expansion

Indonesia to Auction 2.6 GHz Spectrum for 5G Network Expansion

Jakarta. The Indonesian government plans to auction the 2.6 GHz frequency band by the end of 2025 as part of its efforts to strengthen 5G connectivity and accelerate the country's national digital transformation, Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said on Monday.

"We hope to hold the 2.6 GHz auction by the end of this year to support 5G development," Meutya said, as quoted by Antara.

While the auction process is expected to begin in late 2025, the results are targeted for completion the following year. If the process proceeds smoothly, 5G network deployment using the 2.6 GHz band could begin soon after, allowing the public to benefit from faster and more reliable connections.

The 2.6 GHz radio frequency band, part of the mid-band spectrum, offers high capacity with 190 MHz of available bandwidth and operates under time division duplex (TDD) mode. It also supports one of the world's largest ecosystems of 4G and 5G devices, making it a prime choice for expanding 5G coverage across Indonesia.

With its balance of coverage and capacity, the 2.6 GHz band is seen as ideal for boosting network speeds and extending broadband reach to underserved regions. The government considers additional radio spectrum crucial to improving mobile broadband quality, enhancing data services for both urban and rural communities, and ensuring a better internet experience nationwide.

Earlier this year, the ministry completed the 1.4 GHz frequency auction, designated for fixed broadband services to expand affordable home internet access.

"This fixed broadband auction will help promote equal digital access across Indonesia," Meutya said.

The minister noted that Indonesia's internet speed still lags behind other Southeast Asian countries, adding that the 2.6 GHz initiative aims to raise mobile broadband speeds to around 100 Mbps by 2029. Tags:
