PBA: NLEX escapes late Meralco rally, stops Bolts' win streak

NLEX halted Meralco's three-game winning streak with an 89-85 escape in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

The Road Warriors held an 85-74 advantage with 6:43 remaining in the fourth before Brandon Bates sparked an 11-2 Meralco run, capped by back-to-back baskets from CJ Cansino to trim the deficit to two, 87-85, with 13 seconds left.

Upon return of play, Chris Newsome fouled Robert Bolick, sending him to the line, where he calmly sank both free throws to extend NLEX's lead.

Bong Quinto then tried a 4-pointer but missed, sealing the Road Warriors' victory.

JB Bahio led NLEX with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal, while Kevin Alas added 12 points, four boards, and a steal. Bolick nearly notched a triple-double with 11 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, plus a steal.

Cansino paced the Bolts with 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in the losing effort. Newsome recorded a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Cliff Hodge chipped in 14 points and 17 boards, but their efforts went for naught as Meralco's streak was snapped.
