ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) -- Former U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who lost his reelection bid to a fellow Republican in 2022, is planning a return to politics, according to a report by Axios.
The Sept. 3 report cites sources that say Cawthorn intends to run for Florida's 19th Congressional District seat, which will be open due to current Rep. Byron Donalds' (R-Fla.) campaign for governor.

Axios reported that Cawthorn met with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to discuss his potential bid for the seat.

Cawthorn previously represented North Carolina's 11th District in the U.S. House from 2021 to 2023, becoming the youngest member of Congress at the time. A staunch supporter of Donald Trump, he delivered remarks at a Jan. 6, 2021, rally in Washington, D.C., that preceded the U.S. Capitol attack.

He lost his 2022 reelection bid in the Republican primary to Chuck Edwards following a series of controversies. That March, Cawthorn stirred criticism within the GOP after claiming on a podcast that fellow lawmakers had invited him to orgies and offered him drugs. He was also caught twice with firearms at airport security checkpoints, had his North Carolina license suspended after several traffic violations, and videos emerged showing him in sexually suggestive poses.
After losing the primary, Cawthorn relocated from western North Carolina to Florida.
